Chapter 10

Grant

“We need to catch this guy soon,” I said. “He’s starting to get on my last nerve.”

“I agree,” Cullman said.

We were on our way to a residential home where a man said someone stole his Amazon packages from his front porch. He claimed he had camera footage that showed the thief taking the packages.

Once we were at the home, the man walked out to greet us, his brows drawn together in a frustrated expression. “Name’s Houston. Glad you fellas are here. This is the third time packages were stolen from my porch. After the second time, I had a camera set up.”

He led us into his home, and we sat down on his couch while he showed us the video footage. The video revealed a man wearing a gray hoodie and baggie pants. With the hood up and the man’s head down, it was hard to make out his features.

“I’m not sure this will help us,” Cullman said, “though it’s easy to speculate that it’s a man, and we can generalize height and weight.”

“Could also be a woman,” I said. “The clothes are baggy so it’s hard to tell.”

We watched the video again for any clues that might assist us in identifying the person. The thief bent down to pick up the packages. “Pause it right there,” I said.

Houston paused the video, and we all leaned in to get a better look. The back of the hoodie had a picture of Santa at the beach. He was laying out, and he wore a dark pair of sunglasses.

“Jace was wearing that hoodie the other day,” I said.

“Could be anyone though,” Cullman said. “I saw those hoodies on sale at the mall.”

“Hope it’s not him. That would be a shame.”

We watched the video a few more times and then had a discussion with Houston about what he could do to safeguard his belongings.

“In the future, I suggest you pick up your packages at an Amazon locker,” I said. “At least until we catch the guy.”

Houston nodded, his shoulders slumped forward. “I’ll do that from now on.”

We took a report and asked for an inventory of the items that were missing. As we walked back to the vehicle, Cullman nudged me. “So, how was that date?”

We got in the car and headed towards the station. “It was awesome. It nearly didn’t happen but everything worked out.”

“What do you mean?”

“Well, my friend Cassidy showed up at Coffee Grind before Melody arrived, and when Melody walked up, she thought something was going on between us. She took off before I had the chance to explain.”

“Isn’t Cassidy the friend you have a past with? You used to date her, right?”

I nodded reluctantly. “Yep.”

“Sounds kind of complicated to me. You sure you aren’t interested in her?”

“Positive.”

“Did she know you were on a date when she showed up at Coffee Grind?”

“Yeah, I made the stupid mistake of telling her.”

“Now that’s a girl you need to watch out for.”

“I’m starting to realize that.”

Cullman parked the car, and we exited the vehicle.
